What documents CANNOT be notarized?
In Texas, notaries cannot notarize certain documents including: birth certificates, death certificates, marriage certificates, or any vital records (these must be certified by the issuing agency); documents that are incomplete or have blank spaces that could be filled in later; documents where the signer is not personally present (except through approved Remote Online Notarization); documents where you have a financial interest or are named as a party; and any document that appears to be fraudulent or illegal. Additionally, notaries cannot provide legal advice or determine which type of notarization is required.
Do I need to bring identification?
Yes, Texas law requires all signers to present valid, current government-issued photo identification. Acceptable IDs include: Texas driver’s license or state ID, U.S. passport, military ID, or any current driver’s license or ID from another U.S. state. All IDs must be current (not expired) and contain both a photograph and signature. SPECIAL CASES: Green Cards (Permanent Resident Cards) issued after May 2017 do not contain signatures, which may create questions about acceptability under Texas law. Foreign passports can ONLY be accepted for residential real estate transactions (deeds and related documents), not for general notarizations. If you don’t have acceptable ID, a credible witness who personally knows you and has current, valid ID can vouch for your identity. What forms of identification do you accept?
We accept current, unexpired government-issued photo ID including driver’s licenses, state ID cards, U.S. passports, military IDs, and permanent resident cards. The ID must have your photograph, signature, physical description, and serial/identification number.
How long does a notarization take?
Simple notarizations typically take 5-10 minutes. More complex documents or loan signing packages may take 30-90 minutes depending on the number of documents and required signatures.
Can you notarize documents in languages other than English?
Yes, we can notarize documents in any language. However, the notary certificate itself must be in English as required by Texas law. You must be able to communicate with the notary in English or provide an interpreter.
Do your notaries speak Spanish or another foreign language?
Our notaries are fluent in English and German. If Spanish is needed, we can provide a trusted referral.
What is the difference between an acknowledgment and a jurat?
